Observer and Scanner Requirements
IAW CAPR 50-15

CAP Mission Observer is not a pilot. Their duties are assisting the pilot in navigation and to search for objects on the ground, either visually or electronically. CAP Observer Wing insignia are authorized for wear by qualified Observers. A CAP Mission Scanner performs all of the search duties, but none of the navigation duties of an Observer. Training and testing will occur in the following areas:

  • Aeronautical Charts
  • Grid System
  • Visual Search Techniques
  • Electronic Search Techniques
  • Flight Computer
  • Flight Planning
  • Weather
  • Aircraft Loading and Characteristics
  • Radio Navigation
  • CAPF 104 (Observer Log)
  • Other CAP Forms
  • Flight Physiology
  • Essential Equipment
  • Safety
